LETTER FROM MAJOR GENERAL S V MAYALL
31st March 2008
LETTER FROM MAJOR GENERAL S V MAYALL I am enormously proud to have been appointed Colonel of 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and feel as excited and privileged at the prospect as I did when I became Commanding Officer in 1997. Christopher MacKenzie-Beevor formally handed over to me on 5th February when we both had an audience with the Colonel-in-Chief, and I would like to record my personal thanks to him for his outstanding tenure as Colonel, which included a period of unprecedented operational activity for the Regiment in recent years, with all the challenges for the wider regimental family that that entailed. From my current vantage point as Assistant Chief of the General Staff I can see little sign of the operational tempo diminishing in the next several years and I believe that the serving Regiment will continue to need all the support that we can offer it.

Regimental News March 2007

Regimental News March 2007 Since returning from Iraq in November the Regiment has taken post-operational tour leave, commenced training on the BOWMAN digital communications system, undertaken a large number of individual courses (necessary for individual progression and pay enhancements) and instituted an ambitious sports programme.  Two hundred and fifty QDGs have recently returned from Wales and the Border Counties having exercised The Regiment’s right to the Freedom of the City of Cardiff on Friday 2 March 2007 and in the following week focussed on an intensive exercise throughout our recruiting area designed to raise local awareness of the Regiment and to use our best ambassadors – our soldiers – to communicate the benefits of an Army career and the Regimental way of life to potential recruits.

QDG Newsletter 27th August 2006

QDG Newsletter 27th August 2006 This week proved to be a popular choice for R&R and with several RHQ figures away there has been plenty for the remainder of us to do.  While the Commanding Officer is away Battlegroup Headquarters has been settling into the new role of Rear Operations Battlegroup.  Inevitably after a handover between regiments there were plenty of rewiring and reinventing every aspects of the Battlegroup's infrastructure ready for the Commanding Officer's return.

Iraq Sitrep 300706 The Sandy Times - I apologise for the delay in the production of this newsletter.  As you will read the past couple of weeks have seen an intense period of activity combined with a complete removal of any access to phones or computers.  We are now almost back on line!  The busy schedule came close on the heels of the Transition Day ceremony on the 13th July which was attended by PM Maliki.  During this ceremony the province of Al Muthana officially came under Provincial Iraqi Control.  Camp Smitty was then became a hive of activity centered around preparing the camp itself, for hand-over.  Finally Maj Clegg in his capacity as Battle Group Logistics Officer was able to translate complicated “Excel” spread-sheets into a reality.

We are now well bedded into Camp Smitty and an efficient routine is evident across all the different departments.  We have now had the opportunity to practise and refine our various drills in the event of an attack.  Everyone arriving at camp Smitty receives a brief on these actions so that in the event of an attack, every man knows what should be done.

This newsletter marks the start of weekly updates from the QDG.  Hopefully it will provide the opportunity to see and understand what we are getting up to.

C O's Introduction
17th January 2006
The regiment returned form summer leave in mid-August and the programme has been full ever since. Lt Colonel A J Pitman assumed command and Major's Craven and Halford-Mcleod took over 'A' and 'C' Sqn's respectively. Throughout this period the emphasis has been on training. We had spent too long away from our core business and we have worked hard to recitfy this shortfall. We are now structured in line with the new order of battle, there is ongoing work that is likely to see an increase in our establishment if we continue to half the manpower to the 3 Commando Brigade F R Squadron; this will be good news and you will be kept informed.

QDG Fire
10th November 2005
Following the Regiment’s safe return from a challenging tour of Iraq they all enjoyed 3 weeks of well earned leave. An opportunity for a family regiment to be with the family again after 6 months away.
