It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the sudden and untimely passing of Major Russell “Russ” Gallacher, who died on 28th August at the age of 48.
Russ joined the Army in 1994, arriving at Regimental Duty in Sennelager during the spring of 1995. From the outset, he demonstrated adaptability, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to every role he was given. A gladiator both on and off the field, Russ quickly became a key player in the regimental ‘Cavalry Cup-winning’ football team as Centre Back, earning the nickname ‘Gally Tocks’.
Russ’s military career was exceptionally diverse. From serving in the bogs of Northern Ireland to the jungles and deserts of Asia, he embraced every challenge with determination. He also managed to disappear for a few short years, during which (according to Russ, and always corroborated by Sheep) he claimed to have worked extremely hard!
The highlight and proudest moment of Russ’s service came in 2015 when he was promoted to WO1, becoming the Regimental Sergeant Major. In 2018, Russ commissioned taking up the role of Training Officer, he later transferred from Regular to Reserve service with the Royal Yeomanry, where he continued to serve with distinction.
Russ’s funeral will be held at 4pm, Friday 19th September at the Rushcliffe Oaks Crematorium, Nottingham, NG12 2PY.
